Online Class » Learning To Look

Learning to Look is an online class I created for Skillshare.com that teaches students from all backgrounds to train their photographic eye to take better pictures, whether shooting with a DSLR, GoPro, cell phone or otherwise.

This is a introductory video class I created for Skillshare on training your photographic eye. My hope with Learning To Look was to condense the many conversations I've had with coworkers, friends and family about how to take better photos, into one clear and concise method of delivery. Many people fall short of their photographic portential simply because they think they need an expensive camera or a photography degree to begin; but a good camera doesn't make a good photographer, a good eye does. In this class, I teach common pitfalls to avoid and potentials to utilize when taking pictures–whether professional or personal, with a smartphone or DSLR. What matters is that you start, today, with what you have, at whatever level you're at.
Class Title & Description: Learning To Look: An Intro To Taking Better Photos

You don't need an expensive camera to become a better photographer. Start learning now using just what you have to maximize your photographic abilities, by training your eyes to see through a different lens.

In this class, you will learn common pitfalls to avoid and potentials to utilize when taking pictures–whether professional or personal, with a smartphone or DSLR.

You'll do this by compiling a Phlog (photo log) that documents your progress. You'll choose a subject (portrait, still life or city/landscape) and take one photo of that same subject per lesson, implementing what you learned. At the end of the class, you'll be able to look back at the transformation of your eye!

Project Title & Description: Progress Phlog

Your project will be a photo log (or "phlog") that documents your progress in learning how to see photography differently. You'll choose a subject (portrait, still life or city/landscape) and take at least one photo of that same subject per lesson, with a minimum of 5 photos in the following categories, implementing what you learned. At the end of the class, you'll be able to look back at the transformation of your eye!

Photo #1: Starting Point
Photo #2: Focus & Frame
Photo #3: Composition
Photo #4: Angles & Emotional Impact
Photo $5: Lighting & Color

As you progress, upload each photo you take that implements a new concept you've learned to your project gallery. I also suggest (optional) that you write a reflection for each photo and/or an analysis comparing the first and final photos in your phlog.
